Transitions are the handoff between two shots. Three components — a fade through a colour, a shape mask wipe, and a zoom punch cut.

Use a transition when two scenes have nothing in common and a cross-dissolve would read as a mistake. For everything else the timing grammar already overlaps consecutive scenes by the outgoing clip's exit budget, so an explicit transition component is a deliberate accent rather than the default glue.
